RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Madhulika Guhathakurta's research has been directed towards the understanding of the large scale magneto hydrodynamic structure of the solar corona through the analysis and physical interpretation of multi-spectral photometric solar data (both ground and space based). Since 1993 she became a co-investigator on the NASA funded Spartan White Light Coronagraph Experiment which has successfully flown on three different space shuttles and is scheduled to fly in September of 1997. The main thrust of this experiment has been to understand the density and temperature structures in the solar corona especially from the coronal hole regions. Observations from the Spartan 201 spacecraft will address some of the most fundamental questions of present-day and helipspehric physics:

What accelerates the solar wind - a flow of particles that sweeps outward from the Sun far into the solar system?

What accounts for the fact that the Sun's outermost atmosphere, or corona, is much hotter than the surface of the Sun.

She is also a co-investigator on a NSF funded proposal to study the solar corona during the total solar eclipses.
